Since I took my first overseas flight to the Azores, England, and Turkey as a TV news reporter in 1996 (aboard a US Air Force KC-135 tanker!), I've been hooked on international travel. I couldn't have found a better partner in this endeavor than my wife Krista Wiegand. We honeymooned in South America, then she took me along as chaperone on trips she organized for students to China and Egypt. Our son Joseph has accompanied us on most of our overseas journeys since he joined our family in 2012. In Fall 2015, we sailed more than 22,000 miles and visited over a dozen countries as voyagers on Semester at Sea. In 2017, we lived in the Philippines for six months and visited several other Asian nations while Krista was a Senior Fulbright Fellow, and in summer 2018 we bounced around in the Mediterranean and South America for a couple of months. Add to these travels all of the jaunts I took to Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Africa as a military correspondent between 1997 and 2011, and the tally of countries and territories I've visited comes to somewhere around 67, depending on how you count (I'm leaving Bosnia and Saudi Arabia off the list because I never left the tarmac at the military airport, but I'm counting Scotland and Wales as separate countries as per the guidelines from the Travelers' Century Club, a group of folks who have visited at least 100 countries and territories each). I've also visited every US state except Montana, North Dakota, and Vermont.
